An Taoiseach, Mr. Obama

Sunday I headed off to Denny’s Big Day Out in Dublin city centre as part of the St. Patrick’s Festival. It was a glorious sunny day and as I headed down Merrion Street, many others were heading in the same direction to Merrion Square.

Walking alongside a man and his three or four young children I couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. Walking past Leinster House, the eldest child, a boy of about 7 asked his dad what was that?

“That’s the Taoiseach’s office, that’s where he works.”

Some oohs and aahs of amazement from the kids.

Dad: “Who can tell me who the Taoiseach is? Come on, come on.” He was snapping fingers while saying this, may have been a school teacher in disguise 😀

Oldest lad said something I didn’t quite hear.

Disappointed dad: “No, no its not Barack Obama.”

Funny kids

My sister works as a Special Needs Assistant in an all boys school in a Dublin suburb. A fairly poor suburb at that. She loves working there and finds the things the kids say hilarious most of the time – just as well really!

She was telling me last night about a kid in school yesterday, one of the older boys, about 10 or 11, he had come over to her in the yard to tell her a joke. Standing beside her, he noticed her fairly new braces on her teeth. They are clear plastic moulds and not very noticeable at all except when you are really close up.

(Imagine deep Dublin accent)

Teacher!! What’s that on your teeth???”

“What do you think it is?”

“I dunno! It looks like glass or plastic or wet or somethin'”

“Yes it’s plastic -“

“But what’s it FOR, Miss?”

“Well, what do you think it might be for?”

“I dunnooooo…”

“They’re braces on my teeth, to make them straight.”

“Well you’d wanna get your money back Miss, it’s not doing a very good job, your bottom teeth are all crooked!”

Apparently a discussion then ensued between himself and another boy about how ‘train-tracks’ were much cooler looking than those plastic yokes…a few grand down the drain there now sis 😉
